Looks like I might be off to Antigua early next week for a fortnight on business. Hope to have next weekend free to look around.
Just wondering whether any WHOers have any been before and have any tips.

Only place I've been in the Caribbean. Lots of hassle on the beach from people selling stuff and the poverty in the villages was shocking. This was about 10 years ago.

Stayed at Jolly Beach a couple of time once in the Harbour & once in the bluff above the beach!..
The Beach is beautiful and Dickinson bay is a nice beach too!!. Had a party/barbecue at Shirley Heights.
love the place...enjoy!

Stayed at The Pineapple Beach Club some time back (Wilikies) beware of the Rasta Security Guard called 'Tonto '.
If want 'Pussy ' then go to 'The Ranch'.
Don't bother will Nelsons Harbour .
Bird Island ( via the Pineapple Beach Club is a good day out )
It's a nice place enjoy 'Blud'

As I said, I haven't been for a while but 'road rehabilitation' is certainly one of the things Antigua could do with!

ludo - not sure yet where I'll be billeted. Should know (hopefully) by tomorrow.
Company I'm working for has sent a list of approved inns/ guesthouses, etc but I'm trying to find out where they will be staying, so there'll be a group of us.
I've been to Key West (many, many years ago) and Cuba (20+ years ago) but this'll be my first time in the West Indies. Looks like my site visits (I'm doing economic evaluation of road rehabilitation of all things) should take me around the island next Wednesday. Though as I'll have had a 30+ hour journey in from Hong Kong, arriving the afternoon before, not sure how much I'll actually take in on that first day.
The catamaran tour around the island sounds like a good shout. Just have to make sure that I get the weekend off (on my last rural road project in northeast Vietnam last month I was working 23 days straight through)

Antigua's all about the beaches. There's one for every day of the year, or so they say.
I prefer the public beaches to the resort ones. Try the one at Pigeon Point which the locals tend to use. Calm waters and very nice atmosphere.
For solitude on a stunning stretch of sand try Darkwood beach. Has a cafe shack for refreshments.
For restaurants and bars stick to St. Johns or English Harbour.

Actually, I think you can pick up the catamaran at various places... it stops as it goes round the island.
Jolly Harbour is worth a visit though.

Where will you be based?
Haven't been for a while but have been a few times... make sure you spend a day at Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, full of history and pretty much unchanged from the great man's time. Admiral's Inn (in the Dockyard - more hotel than pub) is a great place to sit on the terrace with a nice lunch and watch the goings on in the harbour.
Don't know if they still do it but see if you can get on a Catamaran trip from Jolly Harbour on a Sunday... they circumnavigate the island, anchor for lunch, several rum punches and a spot of snorkelling before heading on to English Harbour and the reggae night at Shirley Heights... the view from Shirley Heights as the sun goes down has to be one of the best out there!

Was there about 20 years ago they used to have an outdoor reggae party at Shirley Heights on a Sunday evening.

get up to half moon bay i doubt you will find a better beach anywhere , the capital is a very quiet town once the cruise ships leave , booked a table at a nice restaurant in town one evening and were the only ones there .
